What are the customs regulations shipping electronics TO Japan?
I want to order an ASUS G73JH-A2 17" gaming laptop from a store in the US. I currently reside in Japan. The store can send it expediated by UPS. The total will be around $1600. I'm prepared to pay sales tax, but what would the duty be? Could I make any requests to the store in order to avoid major duties? Any advice welcome... Any advice

Answer 1 :
I recently purchased a laptop for $1,100 from the US. I had to pay 7,000 yen to the delivery guy for duties in order to receive it.
Answer 2 :
I don't think there is any problem in importing laptops to Japan. So no request.
Answer 3 :
You won't be paying sales taxes, but duties could be imposed. 'Could be' being the operative words. I've had many things shipped to me over the years. Some come in without any duties due, others get duties assessed. Now, some may say that those items not assessed duties were items for which duties did not apply. Not so. I often have smokeless tobacco sent over to me here. Out of 15-20 shipments, only one has been caught and assessed duties. I thought that since I live in a small town, the post office would clue in and I would be assessed duties from then on. Nope. Just that once. As for your case, the duty rate varies depending upon the item. It seems that I read some info on the internet once that put the limit around 10,000 yen in value, after which duties would be assessed. Another poster gave you some info that you might be able to extrapolate from, but my guess would be in the 10,000 - 12,000 yen range, IF they catch it.

Link for additional info, transit times, restrictions about importing to Japan from the US: http://www.bongous.com/country-information/us-to-japan.php Also, a link to a Landed Cost Calculator that with basic weight and size info for the laptop can help you estimate the entire cost of the purchase including any applicable duties, taxes, etc. http://www.bongous.com/consolidation_calculator.php

Answer 1 :
Yeah. Go to microsoft.com. Then download the english language pack. Go to control panel and select english.
Answer 2 :
It all depneds upon which Os you are using. If it is or windows it does have preferred language section wher you can change the language..Let me know which Os you are using then may be able to guide ytou properly
Answer 3 :
If the bios and every part is in Japan, you could check the manufacturers web site to see if their is a bios update in english available for that system. If its just windows...reinstall an english version of windows. If not patch is available you can always reinstall an english windows, and at least your os will be in english...only the Bios and System startup will be in Japanese.
Answer 4 :
You can use it normally with software, but if you want all English Windows, you'll need to buy a copy of Windows that's in English. When you do this, make sure you tell it that you have a Japanese keyboard, otherwise some characters won't match what's on your keyboard. You could just tell that you're using a standard US keyboard if you're familiar with the locations of all keys

Answer 1 :
yes u can.first u just need a transformer to be able to do so.if you going to stay in hotel u can get that from receptionist.in phliphines, just buy from electrical shop.explain ur situation 1st to get the best one.
Answer 2 :
The link below leads to a site that lists the electric voltages and Hz for most countries in the world. Japan has 100 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, depending on where you are in Japan. Your laptop may have a universal power supply. Many do. This means they can operate from any voltage and Hz. Read the label on the power supply for your laptop and see what it says. If it says something like 90 to 240 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, you're all set. Just get an adapter for the plug so you can connect it. If not, you will need a step-up transformer to change the 100 VAC in Japan to the 220 VAC you need
