Is it safe to plug in a laptop adapter with an output of 100v-240v here in the Philippines

Is it safe to plug in a laptop adapter with an output of 100v-240v here in the Philippines?
My dad bought a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop in Japan and decided to send it to us here in the Philippines. Every time he sends a gadget or an electrical appliance from there we have to use a transformer before connecting it to our outlets here because he said that it may blow. We have to use a very bulky transformer for this laptop and I want to be able to carry it and charge it anywhere I go minus the transformer. Can that be possible?

Answer 1 :
Yup, you can plug it anywhere you like. Philippine electricity on appliances ranges to 220v so your laptop adaptor can take the voltage.
Answer 2 :
If the device is rated up to 240 you'll be fine. When I first moved to the Philippines, I would sometimes forget to check and I fried a few of my electronic toys

Is it possible that I will have a US keyboard when buying a laptop in Japan?
I'm planning top buy a laptop in Japan (specifically, a Vaio CR series). But my problem is, the keyboard has a Japanese text (w/ english) and I don't like japanese texts. So my question is that is it possible that when I buy a laptop in japan, the keyboard will only have a plain English (not with japanese texts)? I will much appreciate if a japanese can answer this ^_^

I brought my laptop from USA to japan but now it show a funny line, how can I convert it to japanese?

Laptops & Notebooks - 4 Answers

Answer 1 :
If your talking about the plug, buy an adapter. You should buy a voltage converter as well that may be where the line came from it could be causing damage to your computer.
Answer 2 :
If you mean a line on the screen. That has nothing do do with the power you have a problem with your video. Your video converter is most likely broken.
Answer 3 :
to change the system language to Japanese. (for XP, the options are just placed in different tabs in vista but still same steps tho) click on START CONTROL PANEL DATE, TIME, LANGUAGE, AND REGIONAL OPTIONS click on LANGUAGES tab check INSTALL FILES FOR EAST ASIAN LANGUAGES go to ADVANCED tab choose JAPANESE on the drop down menu click on REGIONAL OPTIONS choose JAPANESE on the 1st drop down menu choose JAPAN on the 2nd drop down menu restart the pc
Answer 4 :
What do you mean by convert to Japanese ?? Change the language to Japanese , Type or read Japanese ? If you see a line on the screen, it has nothing to do with being in Japan. Most probably something wrong with your graphics card or the screen. GIVE MORE DETAILS! BTW Both Japan and US use 110v Type A (Two pin) or Type B (3 pin) plugs. You don’t need any converters

Hi I'm going to the far east is it worth buying my electronics from japan

Hi I'm going to the far east is it worth buying my electronics from japan?
I want a camcorder and a small laptop. Something I can't get in England and more advanced special features. Price expecting??
Camcorders - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
Cost of living is higher in Japan compared to most other areas of the world, but the Japanese do offer more cameras with better capabilities at much lower prices than anywhere else in the world (except maybe China who sells at lower prices - for now). Be aware of one thing. The common camera in Japan is set to NTSC like the US. If you need camera to connect directly to European TVs, be sure the camera you buy to bring back to Europe is set to PAL or can record or output in PAL. Regardless of the PAL or NTSC setting of the camera, you will always be able to connect to any computer for digital editing. In other words, If you see a camera in Japan that you really want but is only in NTSC and you don't ever plan to connect directly to a TV, Buy It! You can always convert the video to PAL in your computer during editing.
Answer 2 :
be prepared to pay an import fee/ tariff when you return...England imposes taxes on all electronics

Japan - 6 Answers

Answer 1 :
prices should be much less in Japan, especially when compared with England.
Answer 2 :
id say your expecting at the very least 25% off compared to the uk but before you buy be sure to check they both work with the uk networks or genrally in the uk and if it has a garentee then find out the address to ship it to if needed hope i helped :)
Answer 3 :
If it has a cord, make sure you either invest in a European/British power cord, or a Universal Travel Adaptor. The camera would probably be worth it (just remember to claim it with Customs & Excise on the return trip! The laptop may not necessarily be worth the additional expense...unless you speak/read Japanese, since the unit will likely not be using an English version of the OS. While you can reformat, you may have service issues. Besides, for laptops, the "newest of the new" are actually in Hong Kong. :D Good Luck!
Answer 4 :
If you want cheap electronics then you out to go to Hong Kong or China, for cheap. If you want something thats interesting or latest models, though not as cheap, then Japan has the stuff. But as someone already mentioned, you need to make sure the voltage is correct since Japan uses different voltage then UK (Japan uses 100V and different plugs) , also Japanese OS will be loaded, and the Japanese keyboard is laid out slightly different then your standard English OS (various keys are in different locations, and the space bar is much shorter). So while yes you *might save some money, you end up losing money on buying a voltage converter (if needed), a New English operating system, and any Customs fees you might have to pay bringing it back home.
Answer 5 :
Prices are NOT cheaper in Japan ! Most electronics are no longer made in Japan. They're made in China, Taiwan, ect. Japanese software is different than the UK. So are the power requirements. You're better off buying in the UK.
Answer 6 :
Prices in Japan are not much different. You will find you are not saving a ton of money plus you will have difficulty returning it if something goes wrong obviously. Another thing you should be careful with some things like DVD Players, Game Systems etc are region coded so you won't be able to play local things on them once you are home without paying more to modify it. Voltage may also be an issue for you as well. Yodobashi is a wonderful place to shop for electronics it is like 6 stories of toys to me but don't expect to see so much different stuff as you do in your home town or ridulous cheap prices just expect to see a lot I mean a lot of stuff

Do I NEED a power adapter/converter to use US appliances in Japan

Do I NEED a power adapter/converter to use US appliances in Japan?
I will be taking a laptop, Nintendo DS Lite, charger for my camera battery and want to know if I need the same kind of adapter/converter I need when I go to Europe. THANKS! People have already answered yes to this question, but I only see 220/240 volt converters to 110/120 volts. US is 120 volts, Japan is 110 volts, so I am still not convinced I need a converter. Nobody seems to sell one specifically for US/Japan.
Other - Electronics - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Yep. Definately.
Answer 2 :
yes. and even if you don't think you do, it would be a good idea to get one cuz you don't want to be stuck over there with nothing to do.
Answer 3 :
You'll need a voltage converter, and a plug adapter. You can get both at a radioshack.
Answer 4 :
Do some basic research before you go. Find out what type of current they use (example: Germany uses 220-240 volts at 50 Hz, where the US uses 110-120 volts at 60 Hz). As far as laptop and other small devices, see if you can find a "dual voltage" power supply for each device, or you may already have one. Look on the bottom of each power supply to see if it shows a voltage range between 110-240 volts. If that is the case, all you may need is a cheap adapter that will allow your cord to plug into their outlet. Some devices may have a switch that you much flip between 110 and 220. (Don't forget to switch back on return). They make transformers, and they are rated in watts (300 watts, 600 watts, 1200 watts, etc). If you plug a hair dryer in a 300 watt transformer, you will not like the smell of your hair, the room, or your tastebuds for the next few minutes while the transformer blows up and burns out. So, if you need one, use a transformer large enough to meet your needs. For electric razors, they usually make a fairly cheap device that plugs into their outlet and has a 110 outlet on the front. I would not use them for anything other than an electric razor. If you have to use transformers, these devices are very heavy and cost a bit too. The larger ones also hum and produce heat. Final word of advice, stick to battery operated clocks, as if you put your 60 hz clock radio in a 50 hz outlet, even with a transformer, the clock uses the frequency of the electricity to determine "time". This means, you lose about 10 minutes each hour

Electronic devices in Japan and other related questions

Electronic devices in Japan and other related questions?
Hi :) I'm going to Japan on Wednesday and I wanted to know what was the voltage for electronic devices, such as the charger for the cellphone and cd players which are 220 ~ 240 v. in my case. Am I gonna be able to use them of should I buy adapters? In that case, of what voltage? Another thing that I wanted to know was how expensive are cellphones (I don't want the newst stuff, just a regular cell) in Japan, are there many cyber cafes, how much is a laptop (again, not the newest thing, I'm not going to make much money in a obento factory...) and internet for the laptop? Thanks in advance, sorry if I asked too many questions!
Japan - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
voltages in japan is 100-110.yes you will be needing an adapt or for your cell and CD player. cellphones in japan have different prices depending on the style you can check the docomo, soft bank,Au stores for what type of cellphone do you like.the cell phone in japan are lined.they are prepaid phones but the rates are more expensive than the lined one. laptop is ranged to 100,000 above depends on the maker. you can check the electronics store for more details. they are lots of cyber cafe in japan it is usually called "mangga kissita" or "mangga cafe" Internet? fastest and the cheapest i know is Thru land line phones.you can check NTT. in that case you should get a land line phone first. they will give you a device that you will connect to the USB and to the land lined phone. by the way to get all of this you should show them your alien registration and certificate of residence or "juminghiyo"
Answer 2 :
I know nothing about cellphone / cyber cafes / laptop costs, but we had to buy a converter for my son's PS2 (UK version) while he was here in Japan with us. It still has the price ticket on it - ¥7320!! It might pay you to look around before you come to Japan, it isn't a simple adaptor though - don't ever think it is - you need something that can raise the voltage from 100v to the required 220~240. Do you know what a Japanese plug looks like? http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2225.html You might need a normal 'adaptor plug' so that you can plug in your converter! You need a converter with an input that covers 100v, and an output including 220~240v. Ours is made by a company called Swallow, if you buy one when you're here, and it's called the Trans pal AG-120. We bought it from Yodobashi camera (ヨドバシカメラ.) This was the cheapest one we could find - about 2 years ago - and you can't plug a UK 3 pin plug directly into it, you need an adaptor to make a 3 pin UK plug work in a 2 round pin socket - type C on this page; http://users.pandora.be/worldstandards/electricity.htm#plugs Now you see why I recommend that you investigate BEFORE you leave home!! Not only is it ridiculously complicated, but the instructions are all written in Japanese too...!! ; ) (Not surprising, but not helpful!! They're designed for Japanese people who buy electrical goods in other countries and bring them back to Japan.) The insulting thing IS, that the converter that you pay so much for is going to increase the voltage to the UK / Europe voltage - just so that the charger's built in adaptor can convert it to a lower voltage and charge the CD player!! That's what USUALLY happens anyway! If the adaptor is built into the charger - you'll know this because it will either have an unnecessarily large plug or it will have a box somewhere along the flex - maybe you should add details of your product, make and model number, and someone might be able to check and see if you can buy a Japanese charger for it here. It's a bit of a long shot though. BTW, cellphones from other countries only work here if they're quad band - or something like that. Anything else will just say there's no signal. Tri band will work ONLY if it doesn't have the 2 different US frequencies. Make sure before you come, because your provider is only out to take your money, and frankly they don't know what they're talking about half the time - which is why our recent house-guest was told by O2 that his phone WOULD work in Japan, even though it obviously DIDN'T!
Answer 3 :
You can easily get a free cell phone from any of the major providers. Just make sure to get your Alien registration card and Work Visa straight before you try to sign up for a plan. Cell phone rentals are almost always terrible deals.
Answer 4 :
As for cell phone, you won't be able to find second hand market in Japan (it is small market). Pre-paid phone is cheap. If you wanna buy one, you better buy at the airport. I think tourist can purchase with your passport. Vodafone shop is on 1st floor in the Terminal 1 or B1(basement 1st) floor in Terminal 2 of Narita Airport. Once you entered the city, you need ID with domestic adress (usually ppl show alien registration card) to buy. Maybe this is for security reason (criminals tend to use cells). In some Asian countries, tourist can purchase prepaid card at only airport. As for voltage, Japan is just 100V, not 100-110V. It is said Taiwan and US products work, cos they use 110V. However, ppl say the products go to the dogs (die) easily

Should I buy a laptop in Japan

Should I buy a laptop in Japan.?
I'm going to Japan This fall with my unit to cross train with the Japanese Army and I would like to buy some stuff while im over there. Im thinking a computer since they're so expensive here in the states. Are they the same price as the US or are they more expensive overseas?
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
They would be about the same price or cheaper in Japan, because it's a pretty advanced country and a major producer of technology. Not to mention it's pretty close to China, which makes everything.
Answer 2 :
+Isn't the electric a bit different over there? Wouldn't you need some sort of converter if you brought one back from overseas? And would the manufacturer give you support here in the US for something you bought in another country? Wouldn't the keyboard be different and wouldn't you have to change the Operating System language to English (which would probably mean a reinstall of the OS?)? Just some questions you might ask yourself.
Answer 3 :
If you buy a Mac there should be no problems with language- but the price is pretty much the same. Windows, the O.S will be in Japanese unless you hunt down a specialty store that sells English language operating systems. There are not many of those but I'm sure another poster can point you in the right direction. There are sometimes ads for a store that does that in the papers or in Japanzine. Warranty is not typically supported outside of Japan

Neither of them are in the Philippines.
Answer 2 :
I'm not exactly sure but the dollar is worth more than the yen right now so it is actually probably about the same. But here is a question to ask yourself.. where do you plan to use it? The U.S. uses 120V power and Japan uses 240V power (not a huge issue since most laptop power cords work with 120V-240V)... but once again the plug will be for a Japanese wall outlet if you buy one from there (there plugs aren't like ours).
Answer 3 :
it is about the same price depending on where you buy it
Answer 4 :
Buy in Philippines. The salesman will load you up on software for a small fee under the table. Japs wont do that for you. Besides, the japs already got plenty of riches from your ancestors

laptop power from us to japan?
I'm travelling from Las Vegas to Japan and would like to know what I'll need to plug in my laptop at the hotel while I'm there.
Japan - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
If your laptop has a 3 prong plug, you'll need an adapter that changes it from 3 to just the two (without the 3rd grounding prong). It will cost about a dollar or two. You do not need any voltage changing adapters.
Answer 2 :
Check the bottom of your laptop to see what voltages it can accept. Japan runs at 100v and today's laptops will almost certainly be ok with it. Then take a 3 prong to 2 prong plug if you need it, and you will be all set

Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
yes..you can use it anywhere just be sure to get a new charger as yours is not built for Japanese outlets and it may break your laptop.
Answer 2 :
Of course you can use your laptop in almost everywhere in the world. But be careful about the voltage of that country. Some countries are using 220V-240V. So you may need to use a new charger. That's all...
Answer 3 :
Yes you can use it worldwide - Notice your power adapter says "100 - 240 V" and "50Hz - 60Hz", meaning it can accept both North American power (110 volts), most overseas power sources (220 volts), or Japanese power (100 volts). All modern laptop power adapters will convert the power automatically for you. This is often called "autosense" technology. The only thing you may need is a small connector to fit the plug into the Japanese socket

Popular in Japan are: Toshiba (Dynabook) Fujitsu (Biblo) Hitachi (Prius) Sony (Vaio) other popular firms are NEC,Dell,HP,Lenovo (IBM), some Acer,Asus,Panasonic,Onkyo and Sharp I don’t see Samsung often and haven’t seen any LG in Japan Panasonic and Sharp laptops are surpassing quality in my opinion.
Answer 2 :
Sony and Toshiba are pretty average. Get a MSI or Asus gaming laptop. Or IBM if you're looking for something for work. As for desktop, build your own or get 1 custom made. Brand don't really apply to computer since all the hardware are usually done by another company.
Answer 3 :
The top PC/Laptop brand in Japan has to be either Toshiba or the Sony Vaio with Fujitsu and NEC coming a close third. I have used and own all the above brands and from my experience my favourite has to be the Sony Vaio.
Answer 4 :
I think Fujitsu is the top selling PC brand in Japan and they make laptop in Japan while others make laptop in China, Vietnam etc. 2nd is NEC

To ship laptop to japan

To ship laptop to japan?
is there any problem to buy a US laptop from www.dell.com and ship to japan?
Japan - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
I actually tried buying one from that very website, and they won't do it. They wouldn't do it by phone either. You can try to buy from the Japanese Dell website if you have a Japanese friend help you, or if you're feeling very adventurous, you can run both versions of the websites. They look exactly the same, so if you know what you want, find it on the English site, then switch over to the Japanese one and click in the same spot. I was going to do that, but I didn't have the courage.
Answer 2 :
The best way to do that would be to get a friend or family member to buy it for you in the USA, then ship it through www.fbcusa.com. They are safe and reliable

Shipping Laptop from US to Japan

Shipping Laptop from US to Japan?
Hi, I'm currently studying in Japan right now, and my laptop broke. I want to ask if my parent send me a new laptop from the US (Chicago) to Tokyo Japan about how much will it cost? Should my parents take the laptop out from its original box and put into the boxes at US post office? Or they should just mail the whole box (Original packing). Thank you!
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Honestly, I would have them keep it in the box for a few reasons. 1) Better security. If the laptop gets pushed around or dropped, or something like that (which it will) going on its long journey, it's more secure in the original box. 2) It might cost just a little extra, but it would be worth it. As for the exact price, I would not be able to tell you because it is usually based on weight and size, neither of which you told in your description. 3) ITS MORE FUN!! Its like Christmas in July.... well, November anyway. Would you rather get your brand new laptop, in it's brand new shiny box, and be the first one to open it up and peel all the protective stuff off? Doesn't that just feel awesome! Or, would you rather pull it out of a brown piece of extra thick paper and maybe go... yay... it here? If I were you, I would keep it in the original packaging. HOPE THIS HELPS!
Answer 2 :
Ask them to send money and buy it in Japan. will get good ones for better price in Japan. Sony,Thoshiba good brands
Answer 3 :
Original boxes for laptops are fairly strong. Usually when laptops are shipped to retails they are stacked. Postal boxes are fairly weak. Also get yourself some insurance, laptops are fairly expensive and sending them non-registered and non-insured is just asking for trouble

Is technology really cheap in Japan? Where is the cheapest second electronic shop in Tokyo

Is technology really cheap in Japan? Where is the cheapest second electronic shop in Tokyo?
I am going to Japan and wanna buy a lot of tech. stuff. IPhone, Laptop etc..
Japan - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
No.
Answer 2 :
No, it's not. In some cases it's actually higher. Many electronics are made in China, Thailand and Indonesia. Even many Nikon's are no longer made in Japan. It's just a myth that such things are cheap there. Or even cheaper. A lap top may not be a good idea as it is designed for a Japanese user. Depending on how much you buy, you would have to pay export duties on the items. You're better off buying electronics here unless they are unavailable here.
Answer 3 :
It depends on what you mean. If you are coming from North America, the electronic prices are not cheap. If you are coming from Europe (higher VAT) then prices in Japan are comparable. However they are not "really" cheap. The advantage of Japan is the higher number of selections you can choose from.
Answer 4 :
When it comes to really cheap technology, you get what you pay for. Meaning if you DO find something at an unbelievable price, it's most likely a cheap under performing knock off. The USA is probably the best place for good deals on technology.
Answer 5 :
With the yen at a killer high right now, tech goods are certainly not cheap. And as said, many items are now built abroad...with some exceptions for new high end stuff. You can probably find it cheaper where you are. New York and Singapore have some of the best prices anywhere. Plus if you get it in Japan, the manual will be in Japanese and there may be no English version, and the warranty is often useless once you board your plane back home. But if you want to check, try looking at www.kakaku.com It is the pricegrabber.com of Japan.
Answer 6 :
It would be better if you'll just buy from your home country since Yen is stronger than many currencies. But if you insist in buying here in Japan specifically in Tokyo, visit Akihabara district in Chiyoda-ku. There are many shops that sell second hand gadgets their. I bought a lap top there when I visited Tokyo

Are wireless switches on laptops repairable?
I bought a Sony Vaio in Japan and brought it back to America with me, and recently the wireless switch that enables wireless networking broke. I was wondering if it's possible to fix it and what it would roughly cost.
Laptops & Notebooks - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
They probably are fixable but cost will depend on who does it. Get estimates first. Try Staples or OfficeMax.
Answer 2 :
Yes it can be fixed, for around £40 using Sony parts.
Answer 3 :
I worked on a clients HP Laptop she bough it Spain and brought it back to the US. Her laptop was 2 days out of warranty and the LCD stopped working. I had her call HP very determined. They had an Account Manager call her back. HP paid for shipping to and from and fixed it for free. The warranty is still honored if not expired. Verify your warranty has not expired and then contact Sony. Also google sony replacement parts. It is an inexpensive part to purchase but not very easy to replace. Hopefully, they will repair it for you. If not purchase the part and have a tech savvy friend install it for you or contact a pro

what are some of the features that are on united business classes to/from tokyo narita japan on united?
i'm planning on going on a trip from Seattle/Tacoma to tokyo narita on united airlines this summer around august. here are some questions i would like answered: ~ what kind of meals do they serve on this flight? ~ are there special laptop adaptors on flights like this? ~ are the new united business seats available on flights like this? ~ do the seats recline to 180 degrees? thanks!

1. " Menus featuring choice of three entrees including local cuisine where available..." "Premium wines, ports, liqueurs, desserts, fruits & cheeses, desserts and Starbucks® coffee" 2. Yes. You may need a DC to AC power adapter, however; United's fleet is not completely upgraded to all-AC power outlets. 3. Yes, either the United Business Seat or the one located at suitedreams.united.com, more likely the latter but it is hard to tell. 4. Yes, you lucky dog. It sounds pretty cool! Happy flying

I am planning to buy a laptop in japan. The device comes with pre-installed windows vista home premium Japanese. Despite all my efforst I was told it is not possible to get an english version vista with the laptop. I searched all the big laptop companies on the web and they all sell their laptops with japanese windows vista(even american companies). Yesterday I asked a guy from microsoft japan if I can upgrade japanese home premium to English ultimate. He told me that I can download the language pack after upgrading. I doubt it is possible though. Anyone has experience in such an issue?Do you think I can do this upgrade from japanese to english?

I'm on my laptop constantly and want to move to Japan. How much will my electric bill be each month

I'm on my laptop constantly and want to move to Japan. How much will my electric bill be each month?
I've found many answers to the question of monthly electric bills, but most of the people are saying they lead a "simple" life. While I will be working five days per week, I'm sure I'll be spending a few hours every day and most of my weekends on my laptop as usual (watching movies mostly). Does anyone know approx. how much the electric bill will be? (If you know about internet or cell phones that would be very helpful, too!! THANK YOU!!)
Japan - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
My bill in a house with two laptops and one desk top is about 5,000yen per month. The bill for someone living alone will be lower, but not half price because there is a basic service fee just for having electricity - which you have to pay even if you live in the dark with no appliances switched on.
Answer 2 :
For my family of 3, with electric AC/heater running almost 24/7, big TV, big fridge, tricked out desktop and 2 laptops, etc., our bill runs from about 7000yen/month in the spring and fall, and up to about 18,000yen/month in the coldest and hottest months. We pay about 6000yen/month for hikari (fiber optic) internet at 100mbps and also includes the phone line service. DSL is cheaper but then you have to pay about 1,500yen a month for landline phone service so it works out about the same. Many providers are desperate for customers and thus have great deals like 3 months free and the first year at half price, or large cash back offers if you stay subscribed for at least a year, etc.. Our keitai (celphone) bill for 2 heavy voice/email/internet users is about 10,000yen/month.
Answer 3 :
I work at home on my computer, and my electric bill is about 6,000 yen/month in spring and fall, and up to 12,000 yen in summer and winter. A laptop doesn't make that much of a difference; air conditioning, heating and laundry drier (if you use one) do! Fast Internet connection is 4,000 - 6,000 yen monthly. Cell phone depends on what plan you choose. It starts at 980 yen but can easily go up to 10 times that

how much would a cheap but nice laptop cost in japan money

how much would a cheap but nice laptop cost in japan money?

Japan - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Laptops in Japan usually cost about 20-30% more than the same model in the US. For example, a cheap netbook in the US can be had for $299 but costs about 39,000yen ($390) in Japan. A Macbook that goes for $1299 costs 148,800yen ($1480). If you absolutely must buy it in Japan or you need a Japanese keyboard then you have no choice. Generally the warranty will only be valid in Japan, except for Apple or Dell computers. You can get a 20,000-30,000yen discount by buying it together with a multi-year contract for internet or wireless service.
Answer 2 :
Dude, don't; now is a very bad time to buy a laptop computer, or ANY kind of computer actually. Know why? I only need to name one console man, just one; the Playstation 3. The multi-cell processor in that thing, even if that console doesn't succeed and tragically goes off the market, is a technological revolution in computers. No joke man, its Akin to Thomas Edisons light bulb, or Tesla's alternating current, or God's women's vaginas; the same way Edison, Tesla, and God created works of masterful technological and practical craftmanship that was also beautiful, the PS3 is a revolution man, a revolution. Now multi-processors were not invented by Sony; the idea of the multi processor was actually a theory begun ever since computers were first made actually. However in practice, engineers thought it was impossible until a Japanese company known as NEC proved them wrong with the creation of the Turbo Grafx 16. What Sony did, was take the concept of the multi processing unit, and solved the problem regarding the cooling system. See, Sony's 8 processors generate barely any heat at all; ultra efficient, blazing fast, and able to access memory at incredible speed. When the technology is adapted to home computers, it will render every PC on this planet obsolete overnight. If you absolutely need a laptop, stick with the cheapest Sony's got. The Japanese people I knew generally prefered Toshiba over Sony though, saying it was more reliable. Ultimately though before spending any money, pick up a few copies of Japan's equivalent of a Laptop review magazine; the "top laptop" in terms of functionality, features, memory, processor etc and how it weighs against cost, changes every year. One year one brand could be seen as the best, the year after that that same brand won't make anything nearly as good. Myself, in 1998 I purchased a Winbook laptop, and it lasted me for the whole of the 7.5 years I was in college. I've heard of Desktops that don't have that kind of durability. No joke, thanks to laptop review, I got myself a laptop that lasted even into years its 300hz processor was long obsolete. Hey, I only needed its word processor; it didn't need to be fancy. So long as it could run Word and spell check for me it worked just fine. Plus, because internet was provided by the colleges themselves that I attended, buth full time and during summer sessions, no worries about speed, even though it was obsolete by 2005 (the year I finally graduated). A friend of mine though, purchased a Winbook himself, having spent $1,200 clams on it, and it turned out to be a piece of crap that he had to send back for repairs I think a total of 4 times. I felt so bad for recomending Winbook, if I can EVER afford it, in fact, I owe him a laptop, from all the headaches my bad advice gave him. I picked up a copy of Laptop review in 1998, and the Winbook is there. I pick one up two years ago in 2006, and its not there anymore. I then had the grim realization, that quality, in laptop world, is very seasonal. Few companies, for some odd reason, can consistently make good laptops. Before you spend any money, pick up a Laptop Review magazine, or its equivalent in Japan; your wallet will thank me later

How to install RAM on laptops

How to install RAM on laptops?
I am condiering buying this laptop ... http://www.jumbocomputers.ca/index.php?do=Product&cmd=pd&pid=001275&cid=812.770.981 Now, If u scroll down on that linked page to where it has "Specifications" It says that the ram is 1 gb but expandable to 4gb...Does this mean that it has 4 slots and 1 is already filled with 1 GIG..OR does it have 2 slots which 1 is filled with 1 GIG..My friend told me that you can buy 2 GIG cards of RAM but only if u order it online from japan... Also how do u install ram on a laptop... Someone told me there is a little flap u open, but does this void my warrenty?
Laptops & Notebooks - 8 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Most laptops will likely have two RAM slots because of space 'issues'. You can get 2gb RAM cards from whatever country you are located in and do NOT necicerryly have to order them online from Japan. As for installing the RAM, on that laptop your buying, there should be a little plastic cover underneath with screws on. Simply unscrew and remove that plastic cover and you will have access to the RAM. This procedure should _NOT_ void your warrenty as it is a very common upgrade that can easyly be reversed. EDIT: There may be more than one plastic cover with screws. The one containing the RAM cards will probably have a small micro-chip symbol printed on - otherwise it's just trial and error until you find the right plastic cover. In response to "Lindsay G": You cannot fry a RAM card. If you insert it the wrong way (which is hard to do on most modern laptops anyway) you will hear some bleeps and the computer will not boot. Simply open the plastic cover and insert the RAM the correct way. Done.
Answer 2 :
it has 2 slots and its easy 2 do it .. flip it around just next 2 baterry there is a slot with a screw . unscrew it , open it and insert a memory chip and thats it , make sure u get the right memory i recomend geting it from www.oempcworld.com i got it there 2 times its cheap
Answer 3 :
on the back side there is place for ram. try to buy 2 GIG u r right it supports 4 GIG Just open a screw. take ram side cover off. put the ram hook side take out old ram. put the new ram firmly so hooks areadjusted
Answer 4 :
A gig is a lot of memory, that's what I have on my laptop. As for installing it, if you have never opened a computer and worked inside it or took any classes on it, I would suggest having someone at a computer store do it for you. Because it is very easy to fry the RAM stick if you don;t know what your doing.
Answer 5 :
Yes 1 gig ddr ram and 4 gig sd ram, I would think there would be 4 slots for the sd ram. The only question I have is I know they make a 512 sd ram I'm not sure if they make a 1 gig ? and we all know ddr ram is faster than sd ram the question is how much faster ? If you had 1 gig of ddr ram and 4 gig of sd ram witch one is faster ?
Answer 6 :
This laptop comes with 2 memory slots which are exposed by openning a small panel on the bottom of the laptop. The system comes with 1gig standard, it could be either 2x 512mgs or 1x 1024mg stick(s), usually the assembler uses 1 stick leaving the second slot available of consumer upgrade later. If you wanted to increase the memory to 4gigs you would have to purchase 2x 2048mg sticks of SODIMM PC2-5300 series like these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146125&ATT=20-146-125&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&cm_mmc=OTC-pr1c3watch-_-Memory+(Notebook+Memory)-_-Mushkin-_-20146125 . If you did this you would have to remove and replace the existing memory to reach your system capacity of 4gigs. To install any memory with this laptop, turn your laptop over after removing the a/c power cord and battery pack from the laptop, usually centered on the bottom of the laptop is a small almost square cover secured by a single small phillips head screw, removing this panel should expose your two slots for memory. The memory is inserted at an angle then pressed downwards towards the inside of the case to lock it into place. After you have installed all your memory, replace the cover and secure the locking screw, re-attach the battery pack and power cord if desired. Turn on your laptop and enter the Bios to make sure it recognizes the new memory total installed. If the Bios does recognize the new system total, exit and allow the system to boot normally, you should now be set to go.
Answer 7 :
Usually they have two slots. Could be both have 512 or one has 1GB and the other is empty. Best place to buy from is New Egg or Frys. Fairly simple procedure, unscrew the bottom flap and clip it in. How about a video? http://reviews.cnet.com/Upgrade_your_laptop_s_RAM/4660-10165_7-6760642.html
Answer 8 :
before buying new ram go to www.crucial.com and they will tell you by online check what type of ram is in yr computer and what type of ram you can substitute it with - you can't buy just any ram - replacing it is easy - just open plastic lid - take old out and new in

I want to take my laptop to Japan

I want to take my laptop to Japan?
If I take laptop to Japan, how do I get internet? Do I have to buy international internet card here or something? I'm new with this thing... I'm staying at hotel and relative's house. palemoonmemory, "giggu maku..." that's so funny. We do say like that in Japanese :-D
Japan - 5 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
NO!!! the japanese people will claim its theirs because they made it
Answer 2 :
Are you staying in hotels? You should check with your hotel to see if they offer internet access. If they do it will either be wireless, or you can borrow an ethernet cable from the front desk. You should be able to get on the internet just like you do at home, seeing as the internet doesn't conform to national barriers. I don't think there is such a thing as an international internet card.
Answer 3 :
you do need to by a Waylan card, its better that you don't take it so you're not lugging it. I'm going in July and I was planning on taking mine but there's so many internet cafes`.
Answer 4 :
you can take your laptop and use it japan to go online without any problem. we use the ethernet type of lan with the same connector and wifi. in case you wanna check your mailbox or something outside go to mcdonald's most of which open 24h and offer free wireless connection say "biggu makku setto wo kudasai. mochikaeri masen. koko de sutemasu" and hotels normally have internet connection probably you can steal a wireless connection or two so dont worry
Answer 5 :
Loads of wireless. Ginza subway. What kind of laptop? Might make a difference. Tokyo will be fine for hikkari fibre or wireless. Other places mostly have NTT Flets or Hikarri. So speed will not be an issue. (Do your really need 100mps?) Countryside is rougher. Here we only have ISDN at 56.6kps it was hell coming from my office in Tokyo at 100mps or home in Yokohama at 10mps. Hotels will have internet but ryokans or others will not. Out of the city places also not so much

I am visiting Japan for a month, staying in a rented house. How can I get internet access

I am visiting Japan for a month, staying in a rented house. How can I get internet access?
I have a laptop computer that I use to send and receive dozens of emails per day, often substantial ones. I do not want to be limited to what I can do on a mobile phone/PDA, although I do have an HTC Touch.
Japan - 5 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
1. Leech off a nearby open wireless router - the default configuration for Yahoo! BB leaves it wide open. 2. Find a coffee shop with internet access - someone said Starbucks charges 2,000 yen for a month's worth of access. Here's a useful site that lists where has wireless: http://www.freespot.com/users/map_e.html 3. Visit a net cafe and see if they allow you to bring your own machine. I think all other options require long-term contracts. You might be lucky and find the rented home has broadband, however.
Answer 2 :
I believe some places will give you free internet access at a house. I'm not sure though....
Answer 3 :
You can get free internet access at a lot of places. I would recommend checking coffee shops or cafes -- my friends and I used to hang out in the Starbucks in Yamashina Stn, but I know the one across from Kyoto Stn has free internet too. There are some local cafes and coffee shops with internet as well, if going into a Starbucks turns you off. (I guess some Starbucks charge you to use the internet, but not the ones I've been in around Kyoto.)
Answer 4 :
Just buy a internet connection and when youre going just cancel the plan
Answer 5 :
sorry i do not have an answer for your question but i wondering how much it costs to rent a house in japan if you could maybe be so kind to answer

Answer 1 :
If that was through XP format, then try formatting it with a different Disk manager software. Make sure that the problem is not with the Hardware. If it is a hardware problem, then you will need to read about the HDD in your laptop. Worst case is replacing your HDD. Make sure that the place you buy it from will accept returns

Going to Japan can i use my computer over there

Going to Japan can i use my computer over there?
Im going from Texas to Japan and i was wondering if i can take my laptop over there and if im going to be able to get on my Myspace/Facebook? My mom wants me to keep connected and i told her that i send her messages via that. Also, are getting in cabs or trains in Kyoto and Tokyo Japan safe? or is there any precautions i should take?
Japan - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Are you asking if there are any restrictions in Japan? No, there aren't. You can access any website from Japan. Cabs and trains are perfectly safe in Japan. Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, safer than the USA. The only precautions are to use common sense. You are extremely unlikely to have any difficulties in Japan.
Answer 2 :
I am also from Texas and I went to Japan over the summer and yes you can use the internet to get on myspace/facebook, just depends where you're staying and their wifi or cable connections. You may also need to ask for a plug because they are different in japan because voltage, as for the cabs and trains they are perfectly safe just know where you are going so you don't get lost like we did. LOL help that helps.
Answer 3 :
You can use your computer. But you need to find Internet connection. Make sure the hotel you are going to stay has some Internet connection. Or you need to find it in other places. >are getting in cabs or trains in Kyoto and Tokyo Japan safe? All trains and cabs are safe

No, Japan would be nowhere if US customers did not buy Japanese products.

US technology goes to the military first. then to civilians. Japan has no real military. they are not aloud to after ww2. thus when u see new technology coming out in stores in the US, it has actually been in the military for quite some time

I believe so. Their cell phones can also double as credit cards, essentially, and even subway passes. Ever seen Eden of the East? Those phones they use that can be loaded with money...it's real. How are WE not there yet?

Will my Bluetooth and Wifi wireless devices work in Japan

Will my Bluetooth and Wifi wireless devices work in Japan?
Is the Bluetooth in my devices laptop legal to use in Japan? Will I be able to hook up to Wifi with my current card there? I just remembered that Wifi did work when I used my laptop there two summers ago. And it seems to be the case that Bluetooth will work there, according to what many of you have said. Good to know I won't have to replace everything when I hit island-side =)

Answer 4 :
yes if ur at a place with wireless internet it will work
Answer 5 :
that is where they were made and tested before shipping them here so I would say yes
Answer 6 :
yes it will
Answer 7 :
maybe
Answer 8 :
Bluetooth and WIFI are universal which mean it can work anyware on earth once you have the appropriate devices.
Answer 9 :
DEFINITLY ITS JAPAN MAN CMON!!!!
Answer 10 :
Your blue tooth will work depending on the version. (If yours is v2.0, then surely yes, else it depends on what the other blue tooth device is.) And Blue tooth is legal to use in Japan, except in places of defense (Illegal in most of the countries). And about Wifi devices, it again depends on what the other version is and what version you have. If you have the latest n-type, it sure will work on any network. If you ABG, then N type will not work. (Many public networks in Japan is B/G type). If it is AG, then B and N type will not work!! So that's all that it depends on, again, WiFi is illegal to be used in places of defense.
Answer 11 :
honestly it is going to depend..when we were in japan 91-98 you couldnt use a cordless phone from the us it had to be bought on the local economy so your best bet is going to be to get in contact with someone that is already there..if you are in the service they will send you a sponser packet if you request one..i suggest you do
Answer 12 :
yep. there shouldn't be a difference at all no matter how far you leave from home

Is it cheap or reasonable to buy electronic gadgets in Tokyo, Japan? Specifically DVD players, laptop, TV,?
Or nearby city near Tokyo? Do all stores have International warranty? Can I buy a sony ericsson cellphone in Tokyo and use it here in the Phils. and in the United States?
Other - Electronics - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
I don't think you can use a phone purchased in Japan in the US. Cell phone signals to not reach overseas. The only way would be to make sure a phone of an identical model is sold in the US and transfer the sim card from a similar phone of the same brand. Generally, things in Japan are more expensive than things sold in the US. I don't know about the warranty, because most things in Japan cannot be returned.
Answer 2 :
It is not cheap to buy electronic gadgets in Japan..specially "Made in Japan". If you go to Hong Kong or China, they are really cheap. No tax! Of course, you will have to know what you are buying. Most of the gadgets sold in Hong Kong or China are only warranty in China, Hong Kong and Macau. Depending on what you buy some will have Int'l warranty with it

Can digital TV tuner for laptops work anywhere

Can digital TV tuner for laptops work anywhere?
Recently, I was thinking of buying a digital tv tuner for my PC. I was just wondering if, say, I buy it in America or Japan, then I can watch both American and/or Japanese live broadcasts while I am abroad in Europe? Or do digital tuners only work for the signals from the country that they were designed for? I mean all digital signals are the same so in theory any digital tuner should be able to pick up its native and foreign broadcasts wherever it is right?
TiVO & DVRs - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
maybe
Answer 2 :
Actually, all digital signals are not the same. At least North America and S. Korea use ATSC, and much of Europe and the rest of the world use DVB-T for broadcast television. I believe Japan uses their own format for digital television broadcasting. You need to find a tuner that can tune all the formats you need, or separate tuners for the formats of interest. Obviously, whatever tuner(s) you do get, you will only be able to watch the only local broadcasts wherever you are. There is no way to watch TV from more that 100KM away, let alone halfway across the world, with a simple TV tuner and antenna. That has to do with the basic physics of TV broadcasting, not your tuners or anything political

yes but you might have some difficulty with getting the language right and the internet
Answer 2 :
I'm not sure about the duty price but it should work fine. OS X gives you the option for english on bootup regardless of where you bought it. You'll save heaps if you buy a bag and not have to pay duty
Answer 3 :
I think whether you buy it in Japan or in Australia, the Mac will have almost the same price. And yes, It will work perfectly anywhere. Apple provides service and support in almost any part of the world, there should be no problem in getting help if you need any. Also, the Mac OS X can be set so you can make the language setup in English, so there's no need to worry for the language settings. In my case, my MacBook Pro was shipped here in the Philippines from Singapore, and I'm using it with no problems so far. Hope this helps your question

Answer 1 :
yes it will work. how much depends on which computer you want.
Answer 2 :
It will work, price wise you may get a decent discount if newer models are on their way.But generally speaking a Mac is much the same price worldwide.I was tempted last year but had an idea that new models were on the way so I didn't.Do you want a laptop or a desktop.Try for duty free,at say Bic camera or shop around the electronics stores in Tokyo,Osaka. Good luck.
Answer 3 :
yeah, not without interpreter, though

Will a DVD from Japan play on a US DVD Player

Will a DVD from Japan play on a US DVD Player?
I wanted to get the Naruto Blood Prison movie when it came out on DVD in Japan. I know, it just came out in theaters and I know it won't be on DVD until like April or May 2012. So when it does come out on April or May 2012, would the Japanese DVD play on a US player? I also have a PS3 if that helps and a laptop.

Answer 1 :
No, it won't. DVDs are coded by region. If you try to play a DVD in a player that's designed to play a different region (e.g., you put a Japanese-region DVD in a North American-region DVD player) it won't work. However, if you put the DVD in your laptop, it should play. A window will open and prompt you to change the region on your video program. Go ahead and do that. If you go to watch one of your "normal" movies, it will prompt you to return the region to your original region. It depends on the computer, but sometimes there's a limit on how many times you can change the region (usually only 5 times). I have no idea if it will play in your PS3 or not. My guess would be...no. But it might

I don't even know if this is a serious question, or if this is supposed to be some sort of racist joke. What the fuck do you think is gonna happen, the Japanese are going to kamakazi your "Dishonorable American laptopu!" or something?
Answer 2 :
Lol, what a silly question, And ppl, theres no need to freak out, Yes, your computer will work with the internet in Japan.
Answer 3 :
Please don't worry about whether or not your laptop will be compatible; it is. Whether it's a Mac or a Windows system, you'll be able to log into any location with free wi-fi access. Keep in mind that in certain locations (such as hotels and airports), logging in might bring you to a Japanese webpage to give you information about the wi-fi services. In this case (or any time you're online) please remember this kanji: 英語 This is Japanese for "English." You can plug it into your search function (CTRL+F) to find it faster. Many larger websites provide English support. Just click "英語" and you'll be brought to the English version of the website, assuming there is one. Good luck and enjoy yourself! Bonus tip - American electronics will work if you plug them into Japanese outlets, but the reverse isn't always true.
Answer 4 :
Minh Nguyen, chill. as for the question, no. i think you should be fine.
Answer 5 :
Yes, if your computer is already set up to use wifi then you'll be fine. IF you can find any wifi. It isn't everywhere, and where it is it's usually for a fee not for free.
Answer 6 :
You can use your American Laptop anywhere in the world - please bear that in mind
Answer 7 :
