Do airport authorities in Japan check for pirated softwares

Do airport authorities in Japan check for pirated softwares?
I will be leaving for Japan on the 20th and am just curious if airports in Japan(particularly Narita) check for pirated softwares, mp3s or movies. Plus, is it safe for my laptop and portable harddisk to be scanned at the airport? thanks a lot for the information

Answer 1 :
I've never had an issue having my laptop scanned at an airport. I've never lost anything on my hard drive. I do keep it in a laptop case though. Getting caught with pirated software? I guess that depends on how thorough security wants to be. Sometimes guards might act like the class tattle tail. I wouldn't break laws in another country. Your American rights may not follow you. Good luck!
Answer 2 :
Probably not. They don't have time for a forensic scan. There are bigger problems: 1. Some software is not approved for foreign sale - usually because of encryption issues. This may not be a problem entering Japan, but could be a problem returning home. 2. You may be asked to prove prior ownership of the computer on returning home if it was made outside of your home country. There is a form you can fill out before you leave. 3. Some files may be illegal in other countries. 4. Some foreign security services will attempt to install malware on your computer (probably not an issue in Japan). The basic common sense rule on taking a computer into a foreign country is to not take anything you mind losing. Buy an external drive before leaving home and back up everything before you go.
Answer 3 :
I have never had them check anything, and they may require you to turn on your laptop, but they are not looking for movies. It is safe to scan your laptop, but they usually want to see it operate.
Answer 4 :
leaving your home country: they will scan your computer - no worries there. You may be asked to turn it on (very remote chance) just to see it works. No one will check contents arriving in Japan: no one cares about computer leaving Japan: see leaving your home country arriving home: no one cares about computer On a more ethical question: why download illegal software/movies/mp3? those items are the copyright of their respective owners and all you are doing is stealing. It may seem OK as you do not see the person you hurt but it is theft
Answer 5 :
If you think about this for a second. Will a custom officer stop you and say "lets have a look at the software you have. Are they legal"? no one has time for all that. They will scan/check you for the usual stuff
Answer 6 :
i think they will not check it

I have a Vaio Laptop that I imported (for a really low price) from japan, how do I set it to english?
I bought a japanese Vaio laptop and I need to know how to reformat the HDD from its japanese mumbo jumbo to an english windows XP, it has a japanese version of xp already installed. I would preffer to use dos but if there is another (perferably english) option I would be grateful. its Dos is also in japanese, and I cannot figure out what to type to reformat it.

well you should be able to select it on the desktop after you right click
Answer 2 :
perfect chaos is so dumb! lol reformat dude its the best option otherwise you still gonna get warnings etc in Japanese
Answer 3 :
Get a lap top which is already set up in English to guide you through or make a match b/n the two computers and do the following in both computers: settings -> control panel -> date, time, language, and regional options -> regional and language options and choose English. It's just a suggestion. Hope that helps. Cheers

How will I get a (temperary) cellphone in japan

How will I get a (temperary) cellphone in japan??!!?
I am traveling to japan to be a foriegn exhange student for 6 weeks. I know I should have a cell phone but I heard that cellphones from america are totally useless there. p.s. i will have a laptop please help if you can
Japan - 8 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Talk 2 ur host family thats what i did last year
Answer 2 :
If you go to Softbank (cellphone company - they're everywhere) you can get a pay-as-you-go phone. They're a bit pricey - around $90. You can buy time in 3000 Yen and 5000 Yen allotments at convenient store.
Answer 3 :
get you host family to help you by a pay as you go phone.
Answer 4 :
Get a prepaid phone. Go to any phone store and ask this question: "Sumimasen, kokode puri pe-do no keitai denwa oitemasuka?" if you can't say it, show them this: すみません、ここでプリペードの携帯電話おいてますか? Then, you can pay for the phone and the amount that you are planning on spending on minutes. if you run out, you can go back to the store and buy a card. scratch off the scratch-code-hider-stuff and after calling the number that is given to you, type in the code number when it tells you. OR ask the store person to do it for you "sumimasen, koreno tsukaikata wo oshiete moraemasuka?" すみません、これの使い方を教えてもらえますか?
Answer 5 :
I'm going to Japan in a week with some friends actually, and we're going to rent 2 phones from either rentafonejapan.com, or else softbank rentals of Japan. The cost varies depending how much you plan on using it (Softbank being ideal for low-call usage phones), from about Y250 a day, or around $2.50. You can either get these sent to your place of stay in Japan, or you can pick them up from the airport upon arrival. When leaving, you can simply put them in a self-addressed envelope which comes with them and then in the post, or just hand them back at the airport. You can order them over the internet with minimum fuss too! You can also get a different SIM in your phone, or get your provider to give you international roaming, but both options seem to be either too hard or too expensive.
Answer 6 :
Everyone is telling you to get prepaid. You can do that, but I will tell you right now I tried to go that route and NONE were available. You may be lucky and be able to find one, but don't have sights set on that. My advisor in Japan told us students that the country had a problem with foreigners doing illegal activity with prepaid cellphones, so now its a bit tough to get. What you can do is attempt to rent a phone at the airport. I suggest you maybe somehow reserve one in advance because those also go quickly as well. They are pricey though. The only other thing you can do is that if you are with a host family, you can hopefully use one with them. Or maybe ask your advisers for help in obtaining a phone for a short amount of time. Other than that you may have to go cellphone-less. Good luck though. Look for loop-holes!!
Answer 7 :
Prepaid will be cheaper than rental. As long as you have a semi-permanent address (that of your dorm/host family/etc.) you shouldn't have a problem getting a prepaid phone. You can buy them at some convenience stores or from some Softbank stores, but not all, so don't get discouraged if the first shops you visit don't have any available. They won't allow you to buy it without an ID card and proof of your address, so make sure you bring a student ID and passport, or someone from your host family to purchase it for you. Most of the standard celphone plans require a minimum 1year contract with hefty cancellation fees so it wouldn't make sense to get a full contract just for 6 weeks.
Answer 8 :
when you land at the airport, you can buy a prepaid phone (just tell them pu-ri-pe-e-do fo-un)

Is it true that the main manufacturer of ACER LAPTOPS is CHINA

Is it true that the main manufacturer of ACER LAPTOPS is CHINA?
I just had some doubts whether its china or japan. or perhaps none of them. Tnx for the answers! Additional question: How is acer aspire 4530 different from 4520? Which is better in terms of design and performance?
Laptops & Notebooks - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
china> like all other computers except apple
Answer 2 :
It's probably Taiwan. 4530 -v- 4520 the higher the model number (in a series) the more sophisticated the machine. For example the 4520 would have way more features than, say, a 4300 but the differences between a 4520 and 4530 are probably very slight
Answer 3 :
Acer is Taiwan based. They have a lot manufacturing facilities in China.
Answer 4 :
Acer is not made in China. All laptops mostly come from Taiwan. Japan does not make computers. They -used- to make their own electronics. Sony is an example. They now make themeverywhere from Indonesia to Malaysia, as well as China, Taiwan, and Japan. Taiwan is very good quality for computer electronics. They are a tech superpower, undisputable. In 1997, Panasonic stopped manufactuing their tubes for their televisions in Japan and moved it to Malaysia. Quality suffered, and I could spot the bleeding reds on their 'PanaBlack' sets. (Always helped to have teh blackest screen on a tube set. Sony Trinitron forever, not so much XBR although those rocked too.) Now, Tubes have stopped being manufactured.
Answer 5 :
The parts for Acer laptops are manufactured mostly in Japan and Taiwan, although they are assembled in China.
Answer 6 :
Acer's main and largest manufacturing facilities are located in the Industrial zone in mainland China. However, their headquarters and R&D center are still based in Taiwan. BTW, all Acer's manufacturing facilities in mainland China are managed and operated by their executives dispatched from the Headquarters in Taiwan. Acer products are certainly nothing to do with Japan in terms of production

Taking my digital media to Japan- could I get in trouble

Taking my digital media to Japan- could I get in trouble?
So I'm flying out to Japan for a month, and I saw that their customs bans anything that violates intellectual property rights. I'm a 20 y/o female, and I'm likely to get profiled for bringing in bootlegged media. I don't download music illegally or anything like that, but how would they be able to know what's legal or not legal on my iPod? I'm not bringing all my CDs to Japan! I also have Japanese music ripped from original CDs that I own. What if I were to rip a DVD I own to my laptop's hard disk? Would THAT be violating their customs? I want to have some way to entertain myself on an 11 hour flight and 5 hour layover. I can't seem to figure out what's legal and what's not, and I don't want to risk anything. However, I'd also like to keep my sanity.
Japan - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
No-one is going to care about your iPod. And it's absurd anyone will "profile" you. Unless you have 500 blank CD-R's in your suitcase.
Answer 2 :
They are not going to look at the music you have in your iPod. I'm from Japan and I go there every year with illegal copies of games, music and movies on my laptop, iPod and PSP. They won't give a crap.
Answer 3 :
They don't profile as much as you think they do. I'm 27 and female and I have dark skin (I'm mexican american). I really thought they'd profile me for looking slightly Indian or what-not, but they just didn't do anything. I took my iPod with me as well and they didn't check. Please. Both times I went to Japan, the customs guy just looked at my passport and let me through. In the Kansai airport, the guy didn't even ask me to put the luggage on the table for inspection. In Narita airport, the guy just asked if I had any alcohol, guns and all that other crap. These guys really don't have the time to be checking stupid things like ipods.
Answer 4 :
Don't worry about that. The inspection are more concerned about weapons and people bringing explosives onto a plane. They really wont care about your ipod or laptop having bootleged items on it

Will HP warranty from the U.S. work in Japan

Will HP warranty from the U.S. work in Japan? and How?
I am now in Japan, and I bought my HP tablet PC less than 1 year ago from the states. Recently the Harddrive of my laptop just went crazy and not be abled to boot up. I want to know if I can get help frmo the HP customer service center from Japan or not, if there is any. Or do I need to contact the U.S. HP customer service and send my laptop back to the states to get it fixed? Please advice, much appreciated.

Answer 3 :
u will have to contact the us Hp service...that exact ting happened to me...i was in some trouble...but contact the US
Answer 4 :
the best way to find out is ask them.
Answer 5 :
your warrenty is valid in any country that you are in, it will be valid in Japan, (if you can speak the language) you can phone them, or take it to a HP center. you will probably need your warrenty information. (have it faxed or emailed to you so you can see it.
Answer 6 :
They won't make a service call to Japan unless there is an office there, you may need to send it back to the US. Also, make sure the warranty is still active. If it isn't they may not give it back. That's something I learned far too late with my ancient Gateway; a month after the warranty I sent it in, never got it back.
Answer 7 :
Get their customer support line from the website and ask them, unfortunately HP has some of the worse service in industry, thats why I prefer Dells.
Answer 8 :
Yeah a warranty is a warranty.. as long as it's still valid. They have HP in Japan, you should check their website and get the number/address to a local shop. They would tell you if its not valid in Japan and probably send it to the US themselves

is it ok to bring a laptop to japan

is it ok to bring a laptop to japan?
i have a laptop thats 120 volts, would that be ok to take to japan?? thanks! :D
Japan - 6 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Yeah, if you feel like being outdated by 10 years =)
Answer 2 :
Well it is ok to bring your laptop to japan but i have your laptop have built in wifi capability without the access of trying to secure a connection because that will be difficult. Another thing is that Japan uses a standard RJ-11 phone connnector. Its very hard to connect with American Laptops and i recommend that you go to your respective laptop company store in Japan to try to get a connection. More likely to have issues relating to finding an Internet Service Provider (ISP) and Phone line. This applies if you want some form of broadband service, e.g. ADSL, Fibre-optic. See other threads here on Yahoo BB. Also, most Japanese hardware purchased in Japan would require a system that can display Japanese characters, due to the software drivers. e.g. a portable printer. You do not mention your operating system (OS). I had a hard time when i went to japan and i didnt have connection what so ever but once you get around to a local wifi store you'll get it going
Answer 3 :
yes. Voltage will not be at issue - if you look closely at the power supply of your laptop, you'l see that it says 100-240V which covers the voltage available in Japan (100V) Wireless access, Internet access (direct cable), etc. should be fine As someone else though said in jest: you will feel that your laptop is outdated when you see some of the cool systems being sold/used in Japan but other than envy this should not limit your abilities to use your laptop!
Answer 4 :
Japan uses 100 volts, but your laptop should do most things with that. You should take an adapter for the plug, just to be prepared. All you need to know about world plugs - http://www.rei.com/expertadvice/articles/world+electricity+guide.html Laptop in Japan eHow (not sure how useful it is) - http://www.ehow.com/how_2037828_use-laptop-japan.html
Answer 5 :
Most laptops power boxes are fine. In fact if you look at your computer power adapter you will see it will say 100-240v on it. My dell laptop and gateway netbook both work fine in Japan. Note that Japan uses only two prong outlets, if your laptop has a three prong plug (you'll need to go to radioshack and get a 3prong to 2 plug adapter).
Answer 6 :
It is fine. You might need to bring/buy a universal converter that works in Japan

I am going to Japan at the end of the month and am wondering if I will be able to plug my Toshiba Satellite into the outlets and charge it. The laptop was purchased here in the US. I know it will plug into the wall, but Japan runs at a lower voltage and I am wondering if it will charge. I had plugged in my US bought sony camcorder before in Japan and it charged just fine, just wondering if my laptop will since I am needing it for my online college classes. Thanks.

You can buy plug adapters and voltage converters at any travel store. They should be able to tell you exactly what you'd need. I've never been to Japan, but I've used voltage converters and plug adapters with my laptop in Europe before with no problems.
Answer 2 :
You say that you are in the USA which is 110v The voltage in Japan is 100v. Most AC mains adapters work on a range of 100v to 240v input. So all should be ok Dont know about the type of plugs though

Yes, same laptop they make in Japan but different language
Answer 2 :
they sell an adapter changer in stores if you have wireless broadband then yes
Answer 3 :
You will need to buy another adapter to fit Japan's electrical outlet. As far as Wifi goes, it will work...therefore, you will be able to get internet.
Answer 4 :
I dont think so. Your charger wouldnt fit in the japan sockets
Answer 5 :
if you're able to log in on 4chan there's nothing to worry about... PD. get used to pages like 4chan.. in japan all the forums are like that
Answer 6 :
Yes, you can use internet and wi-fi. You will just have to buy and adapter to convert the usual 3 prong grounding plug that US based laptop adapters to their 2 prong. (It will have a little green grounding wire)

Will the converter-thingy be able to handle a lap top and/or a hair straightener? Am I better off using internet cafes and buying a hair straightener in Japan?? (I am going to be there for almost 3 months...so...I am not just being ridiculous)
Japan - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Japan is 100 Volts 50 Hz so most everything will work fine, just a bit slower. You will need a 120 volt American style to 2 pin flat converter, or you can file the wider of the two flat pins to match the other and break off the ground pin, then it will fit. An adapter is better tho.
Answer 2 :
It depends what country is your stuff from? If you are using North American computers and electronics, then Japan uses similar plugs and you shouldn't have much problems. If you are from elsewhere, Japan is 100v, with two flat plugs, so you will need a convertor and adatper, if you are using european models for example.
Answer 3 :
The hair straightener will probably work OK, but you may need an adapter to block the ground pin (available at any travel store). The laptop will work fine if you use a Toshiba laptop with a Toshiba style adapter since these are made to work with both US and Japanese voltages. Alternatively, a Toshiba style adapter can be used if your input to the PC is 15V DC (seems to be standard for Toshiba laptops). You probably will need to make your own adapter-to-PC connector since these seem to vary between brands, if 15V DC is OK

Answer 1 :
Francis, This can be a headache! I have a similar problem with my laptop also from USA, though I refuse to go to the Vista. XPversion is it for me. You have to remember that your system is set to USA for any updates etc, I'm sure you can still get the browser to use English, mine does in Eu, Right now then to get down to it! you need to play with the settings one at a time, Microsoft & your whatever server, to find the best setting in your Network Conections Folder, in my case I had to choose one over the other for the prefered connection then set it all, one time I had to remove a connection in order to succeed, it's all right as thenext time you reboot your system it will be found again, after which I was able to use microsoft to auto connect. I have this problem each time I relocate, it is very frustrating or can be, I should make notes how I did it for the next time to be easyer but always fail to do it... make the note! Good Luck
Answer 2 :
First of all, have you subscribe to any ISP ( Internet Service Provider )? If you haven't, most probably you are using other's (mostly your neighbour) internet access. That's when you get the limited connectivity due to the low signal strength you recieved from a distance, or no connectivity when there isn't any available wireless connection around the area. US laptop or not, will not have much problem in connecting wireless even if you are in another country.
Answer 3 :
Open "Connect to" and check if the wireless connection is via "Bridge" connection. Disable the "Bridge" connection. or, disable security software for a while, such as Norton Internet security. I don't think there are big difference between English and Japanese laptop. But if the security of your friend's router is WPA-PSK or WPA2-PSK (stronger than WEP key), the wireless adopter (hardware) of your Laptop may not support PSK security.
Answer 4 :
If he didn't pay his internet provider, you wont be able to access internet.
Answer 5 :
First of all there is nothing wrong with Vista. Second of all you need to do is talk to your roommate a find what router he is using. Then what I would do is set a static ip address for your wireless adapter. If your roommate will let you use his pc I could walk you through the steps to do this. http://www.trainsignaltraining.com/windows-vista-ip-addressing/2006-11-15/ Do what is says but for the wireless adpater,, BUT IN ORDER TO DO SO YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT IP RANGE OF THE ROUTER IS

Should I ship my desktop computer to Japan when I move there for a year

Should I ship my desktop computer to Japan when I move there for a year?
Most people have been advising us to buy a laptop, but we honestly can't afford one, plus we bought a new desktop a few months ago. Does anyone know apprx how much it will be to ship the desktop and if it will even work with Japan's electrical system? What should we do?
Japan - 8 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Sure, there is nothing wrong with that idea. However make sure you stick FRAGILE on the box
Answer 2 :
sure why not and you will save yourself a couple dollars.
Answer 3 :
It would save you lots of money and your computer will work in japan. I have a desktop and laptop both bought in USA and they work fine here.
Answer 4 :
Hmmm. . . That is a hard one. Yes, your desktop will work here as far as the electrical system goes. The voltage is slightly different, but it doesn't seem to affect anything and the sockets are the same size (oops! I'm assuming you live in the U.S., right?) The reason your friends are suggesting a laptop is because shipping is very expensive to Japan. A few years ago, my local PO in the U.S. told me it was the most expensive place in the world to ship to. Sorry, I couldn't tell you what it will cost you, but even if you ship it surface mail (which is not recomended for a computer) it will be more than $100. You can check out the USPS website usps.com for some shipping estimates based on weight and destination. Another idea is to consider taking it on as extra luggage on your flight. When I moved here in June, I took two extra bags. They were overweight and yes, it cost me about $100 extra per bag, but that was a lot less than it would cost me to ship it. Eitehr way, the first step is to pack it up and weigh and measure your box to see what your options are and what you can afford. YOu can even take the box to your local PO and they will tell you how much it will cost. That will also help you figure out the extra baggage costs on your airline. You definately want to bring it rather than buy something here because it is almost impossible to get an English language operating system here. Don't bring a printer, though. YOu can get them here and they will interface fine with your computer. I can't remember what I did when I lived here before, but I don't read Japanese and I used a Japanese printer with no problem. I hope this helps and enjoy your year in Japan.
Answer 5 :
Japan and the USA have basically compatible systems. Japan runs at 100V, though for some reason the South/West half of Japan (Osaka, Kyoto and west) runs at 50Hz, and the North/East half (Tokyo and north) at 60Hz, like the USA. The 50Hz screws up digital clocks designed for 60Hz. Small problem is most Japanese wall outlets are for 2-prong plugs only, no 3rd ground opening. But most power strips in Japan have 3-prong outlets and a 2-prong plug with a little clip lead to ground manually.. So, don't bother shipping a power strip for the US, you won't be able to plug it in. Depends if you also plan on shipping it BACK. Japan is super expensive to ship FROM. A bargain price for airmail is about 4000 yen (about $35) for 2 kilos (about 4 pounds) Links to Japanese postal price charts below. I see advetisements for private shipping companies charging 40,000 yen for a 1 cubic meter box (no weight limit I guess) for shipping by sea, and that's just port to port.
Answer 6 :
OK here is something that is NOT being told to you....first bring your computer...!!! b/c 99% of all electronics made sold in Japan and made to be used in Japan...like your DVD player....if you bought it in the States it has been region coded...so...you will NOT be able to go to a Japanese rental store and rent DVD's all electronic and are region coded for the region of the world you live in ie: Europe/ USA/ ASIA ...so please do not think you are going to come to Japan and get great deals on electronics b/c more than likely it won't work when you take it back to the states...and ALL Japanese salespersons will tell you that. they are very honest here and don't try and tell you a lie just to make a sale.
Answer 7 :
The hassle of shipping and all just isn't worth IMO. Just buy a second hand computer there. Either buy one with an English OS from another expat, or bring your own OS with you and install it on a Japanese machine.
Answer 8 :
About $100 dollars. It may be more if you have a lot of stuff and the box is rather large. It will work in Japan. However, there is a very important thing to keep in mind. MANY outlets don't support the three prongs like America. So, if you want to plug it in, you will need an adapter. These are dirt cheap, but without them, you will be stuck

Can I transfer data from a dead English (made in USA) laptop to a new Japanese (made in Japan) Laptop

Can I transfer data from a dead English (made in USA) laptop to a new Japanese (made in Japan) Laptop?
I have a dead laptop that I want to transfer the data from. I have another laptop that I can transfer the data to. Problem is, the dead laptop was built in the USA (meaning, it's operating system is in English) but the only available laptop that I can transfer the data to is a laptop that was made in Japan (meaning the operating system is Japanese, etc). Now, my question is: Is it still possible to transfer the data from the dead laptop into the new Japanese laptop? Or would the different language operating system cause a problem? And if it's possible, how? What would work best? What do I need to buy? Thanks!

Answer 1 :
People travel with more than one laptop all the time. It's no problem as long as they are not intended for sale. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/ US Customs reserves the right (like Customs in every country) to inspect your baggage. That includes inspecting the files on your computer in search of things like child pornography. However, I have traveled to the USA many, many times over the past decade with a laptop and have never been inspected at all. Also don't know anyone who was inspected or see anyone have their laptop inspected. I am sure some people have their laptop inspected but it apparently isn't random. There is no passport control or Customs inspection exiting the USA. It is your responsibility to give your Immigration form to the airline when you leave: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/business_pleasure/vwp/i94_samples.xml Hope you have a good trip!
Answer 2 :
Yes you can, there are no rules to stop you from doing so. You might carry one on-board with you and book one through in your luggage. You would have no trouble going through Customs with them or returning to Japan - they are personal items

would I be able to get free electricity from a public place in Japan

would I be able to get free electricity from a public place in Japan?
I want to go traveling around Japan and I need electricity because I want to be able to charge my laptop. my first idea was to travel in a car and charge it from the car's battery, but I can't afford a car. so I'm planning on using public transport to get around. I know Japan's very technologically modern so is there anywhere I could charge my laptop for free, other than a hotel room, 'cos I'm gonna just take a small tent.
Japan - 9 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Electricity in Japan is not free. So no place for that.
Answer 2 :
There were several precedents in Japan that people were reported to the police because they recharged their cell phones or laptop computers at train stations. They were charged for "stealing the electricity." Unless clearly marked for "laptop connection" or "laptop station", you'd better not do it.
Answer 3 :
Not a good idea. They will ask you where you plan to stay when you arrive. If you say "in a tent", you will be denied entry. You can't just set up a tent anywhere. The police will want to know what you're doing. If you can't afford a place to stay, they will deport you.
Answer 4 :
Japan isnt Europe; its generally not a place you can go backpack, so i doubt you can get free electricity anywhere; there arent very many public campgrounds if any in japan. Thats why so many Japanese tourists come to US national parks; to camp.
Answer 5 :
It is illegal to get electricity without permission from any public place and some foreigners were arrested at Narita airport actually because of stealing electricity from the electrical outlet for cleaner in Japan. Hotel room would be best. You can charge anything you want if you pay instead. Japan is not needy-friendly country.
Answer 6 :
Nothing is free in Japan. Not electricity, not camping, not anything. There is no charity, no goodwill, no free lunch. You need to re-think your plan. Quick.
Answer 7 :
some mc donalds have connections for computers campsites will be a problem, if it's the summer just sleep rough but bring lots of mozzie coils. another idea to charge your computer would be in a toilet , by that i mean a modern toilet with the washlet type toilet seat they need an electrical connection so just go in the the bog and charge your lap top. there's always a way. don't let the nay sayers get you down. most high class shopping malls have the washlet style toilets now.
Answer 8 :
I'm sorry for asking this and I don't mean it rudely but why should Japan allow you this? What will you bring to Japan? I'm not opposed to panhandling or poverty but if you can afford to come here, you're not poor. It seems a bit arrogant to suppose that some other nation should support you and your laptop just for grins when it's economy is in the doldrums, it has people living in tents in parks in Tokyo, and other pressing needs.
Answer 9 :
The internet cafes in Japan often have private booths. They're often used to sleep in by people who missed the last train. I suppose you could sleep in there too fairly cheaply. Anyway there's lots of electrical out-points in there. It's not free like air is but you can fit in your charging on the sly

taking laptop to japan

taking laptop to japan?
I ask this question before but I'm asking again.... I am new with laptops. I recently bought one. I used at home with wireless router but if I'm taking it to Japan, how I get internet there? I know there are places that wi fi is available but what if I go remote country side that there are non available??
Japan - 2 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
It'll be extra baggage I bet. If I guess right, Japan is ahead of the world in the number of internet cafes available throughout the country including rural areas. You won't need to carry your laptop. Ask around about the truth of this and lighten your travel load.
Answer 2 :
Your wireless router is connected to an internet service provider (ISP) by cable modem or DSL. If you move to Japan, you need to find another ISP that has service in Japan and sign up with them. If you're staying at a hotel in Japan, most hotels have Internet connection. The price can be anything from $10-$20 a day or free, depending on the kind of hotel. If you're going to be staying with someone else, it all depends on what kind of Internet connection your host has. Some people just use their cell phone to E-mail, so they may not have any Internet connection. You could still be in a city, but free WiFi is a rare thing. You can go to the cafe and go online, if you have an account with a WiFi ISP, which is just a matter of paying for the subscription. It's the kind of problem that money can solve, and if you want a free solution, your options get very limited

How much more expensive is Japan compared to Belgium

How much more expensive is Japan compared to Belgium?
If I'm thinking of buying something as a laptop, or a digital camera, would the best choice be in Belgium, or in Japan? My impression was that Japan is more expensive than European country like Belgium. Tips any one?
Cameras - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Laptops and cameras are similar prices. However, most models sold in Japan is Japanese version of Windows only. Don't buy SONY VAIO and NEC models in Japan. Even after installing English or French WIndows, you will find some drivers lack. Maybe you can find Toshiba laptop with English version at DutyFreeShoppers in Akihabara.
Answer 2 :
Such a electronic gadget as laptop or digital camera are much more cheaper than European countries ... If you see in the normal company price it must be almost the same as European's but in Japan people don't buy such prices ... normally at the big electronic shops you can find them 30 or 40 percent off prices. But for laptop ... the Japanese one has a Japanese keyboard ... not European or Americans and if you think Windows XP ... it must be the Japanese version.
Answer 3 :
Both the country's quality standard norms are different how to compare? you decide one brand and then see where you can get Taxation and discount benefits. also see whether getting after sales service benefits or not

considering quality of Toshiba brand laptop, is "made in China" model aslo reliable?, anybody experinced before?
Laptops & Notebooks - 2 Answers

Answer 1 :
All qualities are good , it depends on the user and weather or not their systems are abused.
Answer 2 :
I've never compared the two countries but Toshiba has very rigorous quality control standards and they would have to be followed by the manufactures in both countries. So I would say they were equal. Don't forget that Toshiba wants above all to protect their name and putting out inferior products from any plant would not be away of keeping their name as one of the best in the business

should I purchase a new laptop before or after I arrive in Japan?
I'm going to be attending a language school for two years.
Japan - 4 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Are you American? If so I suggest purchasing it before. Electronics are super cheap in America and the Dollar is not doing very well against the Yen at the moment.
Answer 2 :
Unless you're from the UK or somewhere, it would be better to get it before - unless you are quite fluent in Japanese if you get it with the Japanese OS you will have trouble reading all the messages it puts out. If you get a laptop with an English OS in Japan it is all that more higher. Plus the dollar is so weak it is more economical to bring it with you. These days you won't have any problem writing in Japanese on your English OS computer anyway. Lastly, while infrequent there are a few rare cases where if you get a Japanese OS machine and you install some English software something doesn't mix right and it won't run well. If that happens sometimes there is a Japanese language equivalent but not always.
Answer 3 :
Before. That way you won't have to worry about the warranty. Most computers sold in Japan are set up for a Japanese user.
Answer 4 :
It depends on your plan. If you stay in Japan just for months and go back after that, better to buy it beforehand. But if you stay in Japan for years, better to buy it in Japan

What are the customs regulations shipping electronics TO Japan

What are the customs regulations shipping electronics TO Japan?
I want to order an ASUS G73JH-A2 17" gaming laptop from a store in the US. I currently reside in Japan. The store can send it expediated by UPS. The total will be around $1600. I'm prepared to pay sales tax, but what would the duty be? Could I make any requests to the store in order to avoid major duties? Any advice welcome... Any advice
Japan - 4 Answers

Answer 1 :
I recently purchased a laptop for $1,100 from the US. I had to pay 7,000 yen to the delivery guy for duties in order to receive it.
Answer 2 :
I don't think there is any problem in importing laptops to Japan. So no request.
Answer 3 :
You won't be paying sales taxes, but duties could be imposed. 'Could be' being the operative words. I've had many things shipped to me over the years. Some come in without any duties due, others get duties assessed. Now, some may say that those items not assessed duties were items for which duties did not apply. Not so. I often have smokeless tobacco sent over to me here. Out of 15-20 shipments, only one has been caught and assessed duties. I thought that since I live in a small town, the post office would clue in and I would be assessed duties from then on. Nope. Just that once. As for your case, the duty rate varies depending upon the item. It seems that I read some info on the internet once that put the limit around 10,000 yen in value, after which duties would be assessed. Another poster gave you some info that you might be able to extrapolate from, but my guess would be in the 10,000 - 12,000 yen range, IF they catch it.
Answer 4 :
Link for additional info, transit times, restrictions about importing to Japan from the US: http://www.bongous.com/country-information/us-to-japan.php Also, a link to a Landed Cost Calculator that with basic weight and size info for the laptop can help you estimate the entire cost of the purchase including any applicable duties, taxes, etc. http://www.bongous.com/consolidation_calculator.php

Answer 1 :
Yeah. Go to microsoft.com. Then download the english language pack. Go to control panel and select english.
Answer 2 :
It all depneds upon which Os you are using. If it is or windows it does have preferred language section wher you can change the language..Let me know which Os you are using then may be able to guide ytou properly
Answer 3 :
If the bios and every part is in Japan, you could check the manufacturers web site to see if their is a bios update in english available for that system. If its just windows...reinstall an english version of windows. If not patch is available you can always reinstall an english windows, and at least your os will be in english...only the Bios and System startup will be in Japanese.
Answer 4 :
You can use it normally with software, but if you want all English Windows, you'll need to buy a copy of Windows that's in English. When you do this, make sure you tell it that you have a Japanese keyboard, otherwise some characters won't match what's on your keyboard. You could just tell that you're using a standard US keyboard if you're familiar with the locations of all keys

yes u can.first u just need a transformer to be able to do so.if you going to stay in hotel u can get that from receptionist.in phliphines, just buy from electrical shop.explain ur situation 1st to get the best one.
Answer 2 :
The link below leads to a site that lists the electric voltages and Hz for most countries in the world. Japan has 100 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, depending on where you are in Japan. Your laptop may have a universal power supply. Many do. This means they can operate from any voltage and Hz. Read the label on the power supply for your laptop and see what it says. If it says something like 90 to 240 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz, you're all set. Just get an adapter for the plug so you can connect it. If not, you will need a step-up transformer to change the 100 VAC in Japan to the 220 VAC you need

I lived in Malaysia and will be travelling to Japan in the next month, should i buy an adapter for the plug?
I'll be travelling to Japan next week and i thought of bringing my laptop and camera. Is the plug different from malaysia?i just know that the voltage there is 100v.
Japan - 3 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
Sure. It's different from Malaysia. But you can buy an adapter at an airport in Japan.
Answer 2 :
Yes the voltage in Japan is 100V. Just buy the multi voltage plug in Malaysia before u travel. Your laptop power supply can handle 100 to 240 volt, just plug into the adaptor and it will work as normal. Japan normally use 2 pin only. Camera can normally work 100 to 240V for Japan type camera, pls check your voltage input or your power supply if it is not a Japanese version camera.
Answer 3 :
1- Check your laptop and camera battery charger/adapter if its auto or dual voltages ( 100V~220V ) 2-Make sure the plug prongs are of the 2 pins flat type. 3-Normally the chargers for cameras are of 2 pins round type if purchase in Malaysia . Get the 2 pins flat type , normally sold at RM 1 4-The adapter for laptop if purchase in Malaysia are of the 3 pins British standard. You need to open the plug or get a "power pin changer" from any electronics shops. Normally sold at RM 4-RM8 5-Get all this done while in Malaysia , so no need to fumbles and runs around in Japan. 6- Same type of power plugs applies if you ever go to USA , Canada , China and Thailand . Except Thai and China is at 220V

Answer 1 :
Nah, their Internet is way too fast. Your laptop will explode upon connection.
Answer 2 :
yes you can use the internet here:] i hope i helped
Answer 3 :
It will work, you just need to find either a open wifi network, or be allowed to use a "private" one. If you are using Windows, it will take care of all the settings, asuming the network itself is connected to the internet,
Answer 4 :
i think so
Answer 5 :
Internet Protocol is universal. The connection will depend much on the ISP (internet service provider) of the area or the wireless LAN (WiFi) service of the available access point private or public).
Answer 6 :
Yes you can use your wifi in Japan. Depending on where your at you have to pay for it. A lot of places don't really have WiFi. Most hotels don't have wifi you need a power adaptor, because most American computers have the plugs with 3 prongs, but Japanes usually only have the outlet with two. You can ask for one at the check in desk and also a cord to plug it in. But if you don't think you'll use the computer a lot don't bother. Easier to fly without one, LOL

If my brother is going to Japan and wants to purchase a laptop, should he purchase in Japan or US

If my brother is going to Japan and wants to purchase a laptop, should he purchase in Japan or US?
Are computers cheaper or more expensive in Japan and what problems would he run into having a Japanese operating system?
Japan - 11 Answers
People's Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
Answer 1 :
nothing they have the same operating systems just different languages as long as he can read japen. hes fine
Answer 2 :
US is better.
Answer 3 :
Japan gets a lot of better technologies before we do so he might want to look there first. The keys will have japanese characters on them with the latin alphabet in the corner of the key. In my opinion, the best bet if you want new japanese technology is to get it on Dynamism.com. They will support the item as well (you don't want to have to ship a malfunctioning laptop back to japan it will probably cost half as much as the laptop). They do have much cooler stuff though years before we get it.
Answer 4 :
The keybord layout is different. But if he buy desktop, he can choose US keyboard. Anyway he should bring laptop from the US for the first time.
Answer 5 :
Computers are generally cheaper in North America. I think Canada's a little cheaper than the U.S. However, if he's into Japanese (language), it would be easier to get the right keyboard in Japan. He can get a typical English operating system in Japan, but it would be easier and more affordable to just do it in the U.S. Japan is great for electronics, but where you see the main differences is in gadgets, keitais (cell phones), cameras, stuff like that. Another benefit of getting one in the U.S. is that the warranty will be valid locally as opposed to in a country far away (assuming he comes back to the U.S.).
Answer 6 :
Is he going to live there ? Japan's power system is different. Their software is not likely to work on an American system. I would say it depends on how long he intends to stay there. Computers are NOT cheaper there.
Answer 7 :
He should purchase in the States where not only would it be cheaper, but he could acquire a system that meets his needs in English. Anyone purchasing a computer with Windows XP operating system has the option of allowing your computer to read and write in Japanese (among many other) languages, so if your brother is studying or can read Japanese, even a Dell computer with XP would be fine. The main problem would be service -- if he ever had a problem, finding a service center in Japan would be tough. Most likely he would have to send the computer back to the States for service, and possibly overseas use of a computer might not be covered under the warranty (have him ask about it) depending on the problem. Many Japanese computers, while capable of writing in English, are overpriced.
Answer 8 :
Purchase the computer in the US. If you do it in Japan you will get the Japanese OS. I know this for a fact since I lived there for about 14 years. Its also cheaper to get it in the US. Japanese OS = Japanese language and if you can read and write then by all means but if not...dont waste your money! Cheers!
Answer 9 :
I suggest he should buy in USA. In japan prices are much higher then rest of the world.
Answer 10 :
I got my laptop in Japan, at Aeon (イオン) it was 1000 bucks in USD...and it is just as good, maybe a bit better than usa pc's cause it opperate under japanese lanugage....and i like that better. But if he doesnt understand japanese, he best get one in the USA

However, I have two questions: 1) Are the electrical outlets in Japan the same as in the U.S. (and if not, is there a conversion cord or something equivalent readily availbable)? and 2) I have an extended stay apartment waiting for me, with cable internet connection--is it just ordinary U.S. cable cords? Or should I be expecting something different? Any advice on the subject would be appreciated, thanks so much!

Answer 1 :
1, Japan and US have the same type of outlet. But voltage is different. US is 120V while Japan is 100V. But laptop can usually be used no matter what voltage. Check its manual. If you need converter, you can buy it at airport or ordinary shops. 2, If you mean LAN cable, it's the same with US.
Answer 2 :
http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+10569 As shown above, only American 3 prongs plug must be required to adapter for Japanese outlets where have only two holes. If you are nervous to voltage, try some cheap transformer sold at everywhere else. Otherwise, everything should be fine in standard. No problem and enjoy to stay PC life there.
Answer 3 :
the japanese plugs dont have the bottom ground wire hole, and they are 110 volts instead of 120 volts. My nintendo DS lite charger works in japan and USA, so your things that need a ground wire or need 120 volts will not work in japan. I think your laptop should work as long as it doesnt have the ground wire prong in it. Most japanese company laptops dont have it, like my fujitsu laptop and toshiba laptop dont have the prong, but my dell laptop does

Answer 1 :
depends wut u type in like in portugal (where my uncle lives) if you type something in on google it comes up with english results if u type down an english phrase but offers to translate it into portugese which means that u wil be fine as long as u remember how to write english =]
Answer 2 :
You won't need a translator. As long as the sites you currently visit are in English, they will be that way in Japan as well. Many sites have different domain name so instead of .com, in Japan, it's .jp. I know when I was in Europe at internet cafes, Yahoo for example would come up in that country's language, but I would just erase it out of the address bar and type in whatever I wanted and I had English sites...however, the keyboard was in their language and it's probably that way in Japan too, but if you are using your own computer, you should be fine.
Answer 3 :
no its in english. just remember to put .com not .co.jp
Answer 4 :
Japan doesn't have a filter that makes everything show up in Japanese, even sites that normally aren't in Japanese. While you might wind up with a temporary home page in Japanese (e.g. maybe your go to Google.jp instead of Google.com because you're on a Japanese server/ISP/whatever determines these things) every other website you go to should be in whatever language it's always in.
Answer 5 :
It will be the same as it is here.If you type in 'yahoo.com', it will be in English

Anyone know places in japan where you can charge your phone, laptop and camera batteries

Anyone know places in japan where you can charge your phone, laptop and camera batteries?
Other than your accommodation, do internet cafes or train stations offer you electricity? I need this for long term trips. Thanks.

Answer 1 :
For cell phone, you can charge it at some convenience stores or you can buy a portable charger. But there is no place to charge laptop or camera. First of all, your laptop or camera must have different voltages. Japan is 100VAC. You need a converter if you want to charge it.
Answer 2 :
I saw a cell phone charging station at Subway and I'm sure you could recharge at an internet cafe because some people stay there all night.
Answer 3 :
For mobile phones there are charging lockers at some major electronics stores. You basically pay a few hundred yen to place your phone in a locker with various AC adaptors for phones sold in Japan. Internet cafes might have space for laptops, it varies and depends on each cafe. One thing they do require is ID and some places only accept Japanese resident ID. Passports for tourists are sometimes not accepted. It is worth to try and at least ask. Also for cell phones sold in Japan, most stores sell a battery pack where you can use AA batteries to power up your mobile phone
