Is it safe to bring a Laptop While Travelling?
Hi everyone. I went to Japan but unfortunately I had to leave m laptop in Manila because it contains some mp3s from the Internet. Is it safe to bring my laptop to Japan(Narita Airport) next time? Will the authorities investigate on my laptop? Is it safe for my laptop to undergo a scanning test on the airport? Im just so afraid that something will happen on my laptop if I bring it on my next journey to Japan. Thanks in advance for the advice.

no
Answer 2 :
It is very common for people to carry laptops. It will be x-rayed and nothing else unless they think you are a terrorist. Remember that you must carry it on board so that will be your hand luggage.
Answer 3 :
ive never been to japan but i wouldnt take my laptop only because i would be afraid that i would get it stolen
Answer 4 :
never take anything on a trip that you aren't willing to part with....things get taken/lost/stolen all the time, best if you really could live withou them
Answer 5 :
If you insist on taking your laptop with you, you should ensure that there is NOTHING on your hard-drive etc that can get you into trouble, some countries are really strict about stuff like that, and so they should be. Make sure that you have full travel insurance, and double check that it will cover the excessive cost of replacing a lap-top just in case anything does go wrong with it. Remember to make removable copies of ALL of your important information, because no insurance company can cover that huge loss!

I travel from the US and I always bring my laptop, and I have never had a problem with it. The scanning test can't tell you what is in you computer, it is being scanned to make sure that there is no weapons, drugs, etc in the laptop bag and in the laptop.... that's how I always thought.

Scanning/x-ray does not damage your laptop. I have flown countless number of times, also to Japan, and my laptop is fine. They do not check your laptop when you come to the airport. If you have done something else suspicious, maybe they will, but if you are a "clean" person with no problems, they don't have time. Still, get rid of any porn or other things like that. Don't worry about downloaded mp3s, they have no way of knowing where they came from without extensive checking. I had tons of downloaded mp3s when I came into Japan, downloaded a few while in Japan and left without problems.
